Divided by the River Thames, the differences between London as it appears north and south of the river have long been disputed (and joked about). The fact of the matter is that whether you choose to live north or south, you are bound to venture to the other side regularly. When it comes to residential property, costs are on average lower in the south than the north. However, do not follow the common misconception that all property is more expensive north of the river and that South London is therefore cheap. This is simply incorrect as a rule of thumb. As with anywhere in London, value varies from street to street, corner to corner, house to house.
Young and old
Whereas longer established areas like Battersea and Wimbledon have long been on the radar of those seeking iconic and efficient locations, up-and-coming areas like Clapham and Brixton have become vibrant and welcoming places to settle for young professionals and families alike. That’s not to say that the ‘up-and-coming’ areas have no history – Brixton windmill, for example, was constructed over 200 years ago, and the David Bowie Memorial recently became a new addition to Brixton’s list of landmarks.
The Shard, the London Eye, the O2 Arena, Shakespeare’s Globe, Battersea Power Station and Tate Modern are some of London’s most iconic landmarks – and they’re all in South London. Other gems of the south include Albert Bridge (Wandsworth), Putney Bridge, Croydon Palace (the Summer residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury for over 500 years) and the beautiful Peace Pagoda in Battersea. Sports fans will be pleased to know that South London has a long and vibrant sporting heritage. Oval cricket ground became the first English ground to host international test cricket in 1880, and it also hosted the first ever international football game between England and Scotland. Wimbledon tennis championships began in 1877. Barnes Rugby Football Club is one of the oldest sports clubs in the world. Of course, for contemporary national and international rugby, you can easily pay a visit to Twickenham Stadium. And if golf is your sport, you can enjoy the pristine courses at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club or Richmond Golf Club. Finally, you also have access to facilities for more niche sports, from the Royal Ballet School’s academy in East Sheen to various rowing clubs in Putney. There’s something for every breed of sports enthusiast.
For anyone looking for a taste of country life or a close connection to nature and wildlife, Richmond Park in East Sheen is a safe haven. Here you can bare witness to a whole host of attractive and often rare wildlife. Indeed, the largest of all London’s royal parks, Richmond Park it is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation.
The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) also have a conservation centre in South London.
